Designed on the orders of Heinz Guderian as a response to the Soviet T-34. The Panzerkampfwagen V “Panther” was one of the most feared German weapons of World War II. It had frontal armor that could deflect shells from all but the very heaviest allied anti-tank weapons and a powerful gun that could tear through a Sherman or T-34 from over a mile away. Its speed and battlefield mobility were far superior to heavy tanks like the Tiger I or II, and it was almost as cheap to build as a Panzer IV.
Despite this, the Panther's success as a weapon of war was mixed. Its impressive features were offset by chronic mechanical problems stemming from a troubled and mismanaged development period. It guzzled fuel at an unsustainable rate and couldn't be trusted to drive more than 30 miles, even on paved roads, without breaking down.
This book looks at the design and development of the Panther, its strengths and weaknesses, and provides detailed information about selected Panther actions on both the eastern and western fronts.

I always enjoy learning things about WW2 and remember how my family would drop in on my father-in-law and I would love to browse his book on the weapons of that time period. This book details one such weapon in the German Panther tank which includes not only technical specifications, how it was brought into production, and what it was like to operate the vehicle but most importantly (in my opinion) actual accounts of it's experiences on the battlefields of both the East and the Est fronts. A tremendous book that I really enjoyed and am hoping there are more such "Rapid Reads" in the future.Product details

The reason for the two star rating is the amount of opinions the author gives. However, the general informations offered is good for a basic understanding of the Panther.
short but well written and interesting, gave me at least one fact I had not known of otherwise
Fine short study of the WW2 German Panther tank. Makes it clear why the Panther never fulfilled expectations & was a strategic failure despite many excellent qualities. Well written & organized, this is both easy to read & easy to access information. I have read & studied a lot of material on armored vehicles, but still found this to be interesting & informative. In addition to the technical data there are useful examples of success & failure of the Panther in combat.
