This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Four years on the firing line James Cooper Nisbet Books

I ordered this book specifically to read about ancestors that fought in the 21st Georgia, on the right side of that conflict for the Confederacy. I expected so very much and when I opened it upon receipt I looked at the pages and man was I ever disappointed. The printing of the book looks as though it was printed on a home printer that was running very low on toner or ink. The bindery work and cover are great but the ENTIRE BOOK is so faint on the text and the edges of the type face are often ragged making it extremely difficult to read.

I began reading the book, and within 30 minutes the light printing and ragged type faced fonts gave me a headache, as I had to stop frequently to rub my eyes while l trying to figure out what this word or that word may be.

I have just ordered a REPLACEMENT book advising them of my problems with this particular copy and I am sending this one back. I noticed on one of the last pages there is a publication date only a few days ago which make be believe that this was just printed. IF this is the case I can not believe that someone in Quality Assurance allowed this poorly produced item to ever be seen by anyone other than the recycle man.

Please keep in mind I am not critical of the contents of the book. The chapters I read in the 30 minutes I suffered through its reading were quite good, and the writer makes you feel as though you are there with him and it is most enjoyable.

MY ONLY Complaint about this product is the absolutely dismally poor quality of the printing of the text and the difficulty in reading because of that fact.

If the replacement book is better I will certainly get on here and crow about the outcome.
Likewise if the replacement book is as poorly produced as was this one I will so state.

I received my replacement book and it is actually no better than the one I had returned. Again the stories are great but reading them is so difficult due to the amazingly poor prating quality that it is no pleasure to read.

Four years on the firing line James Cooper Nisbet Books Reviews

This is a fairly complete memoir of the Civil War written by James Nisbet, who was first a captain in the 21st Georgia and then colonel of the 66th Georgia. It's been severely edited Bell Wiley, in the introduction, admits to having removed "irrelevant" material, regularized spelling, etc. I hate it when editors do this. I want to read the primary document as the author wrote it. Anyway, Nisbet describes the Valley campaign, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Ringgold, and the rest of the events leading to the fall of Atlanta. He was then a prisoner at Johnson's Island. Nisbet's writing is rather dry and probably not worth reading for entertainment value, although he does have some interesting views on arming the slaves (which he supports).
This is a stunningly good book, the personal reminisces of a Confederate combat officer who spent four years fighting for the South. That he survived one of the horrific battles he was engaged in is remarkable but to have survived Jackson's Valley campaign (five intense battles), the Seven Days (7 pitch battles around Richmond, Virginia) and Second Manassas (where after running out of ammunition he fights Union troops with rocks and rifle butts), Antietam and Fredericksburg, is quite miraculous. He is then transferred to Bragg's army in the West and goes at it again, leading his regiment with distinction in the North Georgia campaign. He seemed to get a thrill out of combat, was good at it and won the admiration of all.

After raising 2 companies for the Southern war effort, he becomes Colonel of the 64th Georgia two weeks after his 24th birthday. He is captured at Atlanta and sent north to spend the remainder of the war confined at Johnson Island, a Union prisoner of war camp in Lake Erie. Within his eight man mess is a future 2 term Governor of Georgia, a future US Senator, a Congressman and multiple county judges.

One cannot help but to be struck with the unrepentant attitude of Colonel Nesbit and the men he served with. One cannot help but to admire their devotion to duty as they saw it. It is sad, really, to see such valor and such commitment to a cause such as slavery. But these men did not see the issue that way They claimed their cause was States Rights. We can be thankful for the Colonel's book; it is deviod of rancor. As such it is one of the few books I have read which gets us closer today to how the participants of the Civil War thought and allows us a brief few seconds of understanding as to the attitudes with which this war was contested.

This is truly a most remarkable glimpse directly into our past.
A very fine book that I enjoyed very much.
Great book.
